May 7, - Commemoration of the Apparition of the Sign of the Cross over Jerusalem during the Reign of Emperor Constantius, Son of Constantine the Great

The event took place Tuesday precedingthe Feast of the Ascension, i.e., on May 7th, 351.

The rays emanating from the cross spread from Golgotha to Mount Olivet.

At that time, Cyril was Bishop of Jerusalem.

Troparion - Tone 1

The sign of Your Cross appeared in a dazzling glow, more radient than the sun. O Saviour, You stretched it out from the Holy Moutain to the place of Calvary, maifestingin this way the power You have given to it. Preserve our Public Authorities in strength, establish our country in peace, and save us through the prayers of the Mother of God.

Kondakion - Tone 4

The pure and vivifying Cross which opened paradise appeared in splendor over the earth and extended its dazziling rays to the heavens. Today we faithful accept its radianceas our guide to the Eternal Light, we bear it in out struggles as an assurance of victory and triumph.
