A Glance at the First Seven Ecumenical Councils ![]() 1.The first Ecumenical Council was held in Nicea (325 AD); composed the first part of the Nicene Creed (related to the Father and the Son). 2.The second Ecumenical Council was held in Constantinople (381 AD); completed the Nicene Creed in its present form. 3.The third Ecumenical Council was held in Ephesus, present Turkey (431 AD); proclaimed the Virgin Mary as Theotokos, i.e. Mother of God. 4.The fourth Ecumenical Council was held in Chalcedon, near Constantinople (451 AD); proclaimed Christ as true Man and true God; our title as Melkites goes back to that Council. 5.The fifth Ecumenical Council was held in Constantinople (553 AD); reaffirmed all decisions taken by the preceding Councils and rejects Monophysism (i.e. one nature in Christ) 6.The sixth Ecumenical Council was held in Constantinople (680-681 AD); affirmed that Christ had both human and divine wills. 7.The seventh Ecumenical Council was held again in Nicea (787 AD); restored the veneration of the holy Icons. |
